What will the Successful Candidate be Doing?

The successful candidate will be delivering a professional occupational health and safety service to Sellafield’s Engineering Design Function. This role supports our talented Design Engineering Community in considering safety within challenging technical concepts, to be able to deliver an array of diverse projects across the Sellafield Estate. Our Safety Professionals have to be prepared to respond to challenging questions which could relate to any area of design. This will require lateral thinking, research and good communication backed up with close working within a supportive team.

At Sellafield, Safety starts in Design. We have a vast portfolio of projects from new build facilities to decommissioning and the safe demolition of existing facilities, across reactor, chemical, production and waste plants. We even have our own infrastructure containing railways to safely transport the high hazard waste. This team will also play a pivotal role in the safe delivery of the design of our billion-pound new build construction projects that will play a pivotal role in supporting Sellafield over the next 50-100 years.

The work is diverse, no problem is ever the same and we encourage creativeness and research in finding answers that we may potentially not know yet. If you have a love for engineering, innovation and safety and you’re someone who finds themselves questioning “why or who designed it like that” then this role is for you!

Key Responsibilities

• Provide occupational safety input throughout the design from conception to completed build, into operation and through decommissioning.
• Input into the direction of occupational safety in engineering and design.
• Support and conduct hazard studies, prepare and present safety training, perform safety inspections, make appropriate recommendations and offer safety advice to a range of professional engineering disciplines in a persuasive manner.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Skills:

• NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, or equivalent (or evidence of working towards).
• A diverse project background, whereby you have had exposure considering H&S aspects across mechanical, electrical or chemical environments
• Technical Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (TechIOSH) or greater.
• In-depth knowledge of occupational safety principles, legislation and their interpretation and application

Others considered to be desirable:
• Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH).
• Experience of supporting occupational safety requirements in a design and engineering environment.
• An understanding of safety cases and nuclear safety assessment.
• Good report writing and written communication skills.
• Good presentation skills.
• Ability to interact proactively with key stakeholders.
• Capable of reading technical and engineering drawings and engineering flow diagrams.
