Who are we?

We are delivering against national safety, security and energy needs. In operating, developing, and decommissioning the Sellafield site, we are also delivering the largest environmental restoration project in Europe.

In short, we solve complex nuclear, engineering, and infrastructure challenges for the UK every single day.

In the past, we have been responsible for breakthroughs such as the world’s first full-scale commercial nuclear power station, and today we are helping to keep lights on across the UK by safely receiving and storing spent nuclear fuel from the UK’s fleet of power stations.

Sellafield is the only site in the country that can safely manage all forms of nuclear waste, with our teams finding new ways to ensure it is kept safe until a permanent disposal facility is ready.
We are also guardians of the UK’s largest stockpile of nuclear materials.

Our world-class engineers and nuclear professionals tackle these challenges with the same spirit of innovation that has always run through our organisation.

All our activities are driven by a single purpose: to create a clean and safe environment for future generations.

We deliver on that purpose while providing value to:

• Our people – helping them to grow, develop and flourish;
• Our communities – creating a positive social impact in West Cumbria, Warrington and beyond; and
• Our industry – supporting the nation’s nuclear infrastructure, completing our decommissioning mission, and shaping best-practice standards.

Safety: Sellafield, Cumbria or Risley, Warrington

Are you passionate about safety & hazard prevention? Do you want to influence the safe delivery of the future of Europe’s largest nuclear site?

The Sellafield site has the most diverse range of nuclear facilities in the world. Our Safety programme is split into two areas. The generation of Safety Case reports and studies so we can be assured our operations can run safe, and frontline Radiological Protection & Safety colleagues who enforce the safety standards that keep our people and community safe.

Safety Case professionals work on projects and facilities site-wide and through the full lifecycle from design, through operations, to decommissioning and demolition. They are responsible for not only understanding and analysing the hazards and risks that could occur but identifying how safety can be managed and ensuring robust controls are implemented in practice. All roles require you to operate as part of a multi-disciplined team, solving problems within a challenging context.

Radiological Protection and Safety advisors play a critical role in ensuring that Sellafield comply with health and safety legislation and maintain a safe environment for those working on the site. They’re the frontline when it comes to safety, carrying out technical assessments, investigations, undertaking assurance activities and developing standards to attending stakeholder meetings and advising on safety aspects of specific projects. As a graduate in the Safety profession, you will be involved with the Central Safety Support teams and the frontline Safety Delivery teams, aligned to plant areas, developing towards a fully competent advisor.

Our Safety graduates don’t only go on to achieve chartership with their chosen degree discipline, many also go on to become chartered safety professionals too. If you’re looking personal growth, professional development and purposeful work, safety is the scheme for you.
