Design Engineering

Imagine. Design. Solve.

Experience how engineers turn ideas into solutions and discover how different engineering disciplines work together to solve complex challenges.

Our Design Engineering Work Experience programme gives you the opportunity to step into the world of engineering design at Sellafield Ltd and experience how creativity, technical knowledge and teamwork come together.

Throughout the programme, you’ll work as part of a multidisciplinary design team to tackle a real-life engineering challenge faced at Sellafield. You’ll explore different engineering disciplines, develop ideas, meet experienced engineers and work with graduates, apprentices and industrial placement students to understand how engineers turn problems into solutions.

Available in West Cumbria and Warrington, the programme is suitable for learners in Years 11, 12 and 13.

  • Engineering design starts with a challenge.

Design Engineers combine creativity, technical knowledge, maths and science to develop processes, machines, buildings and systems that work safely and efficiently. They take ideas and develop practical solutions, from concept through to design, procure, test, commission and set to work.

During the week, you’ll discover how engineers:

    • Understand and define a problem
    • Develop and explore possible solutions
    • Apply different engineering disciplines to the same challenge
    • Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
    • Use creativity alongside technical thinking
    • Develop and improve engineering ideas

It’s not about already having the answer. It’s about being curious, asking questions and working with others to find a solution.

  • You’ll work as part of a multi-disciplinary design team to tackle a real-life engineering challenge that we face at Sellafield. Together, you’ll define and develop innovative solutions- just like our engineers do every day.

You will work with Sellafield graduates, apprentices and industrial placement students to try each of our Design Engineering disciplines:

    • Chemical & Process Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Control, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering
    • Civil, Structural & Architectural Engineering

This is a unique opportunity to experience how different engineering specialisms collaborate to solve complex problems.

Throughout the week, you’ll also connect with experienced members of our design engineering community, gaining valuable insight into the diverse roles that contribute to our mission.

  • Throughout your experience, you’ll have opportunities to develop:

    • Problem-solving, understanding challenges and working towards solutions
    • Creativity and innovation, developing and exploring ideas
    • Teamwork, collaborating with people bringing different perspectives
    • Communication, listening to others and explaining your thinking
    • Leadership, taking responsibility and contributing to your team
    • Engineering awareness, understanding how different disciplines approach problems

Most importantly, you’ll gain a better understanding of the different areas of Design Engineering and begin to discover which disciplines and ways of working interest you most.

  • Engineering isn’t one career. It’s a collection of different disciplines that work together to solve problems.

Your experience could help you discover an interest in areas such as:

    • Chemical & Process Engineering: Explore how processes and systems can be designed to operate effectively.
    • Mechanical Engineering: Discover engineering associated with machines, equipment and mechanical systems.
    • Control, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering: Explore the engineering behind electrical, control and instrumentation systems.
    • Civil, Structural & Architectural Engineering: Discover how engineers contribute to buildings, structures and infrastructure.

    Keep exploring

You don’t need to know which type of engineering is right for you yet.

Use your work experience to explore the different disciplines, talk to engineers, graduates and apprentices, and discover which areas match your interests and strengths.

  • This programme could be right for you if you:

    • Enjoy solving problems and thinking outside of the box
    • Are curious about how things work
    • Like developing or improving ideas
    • Enjoy maths, science, technology and practical problem-solving
    • Like working collaboratively with others
    • Are creative as well as analytical
    • Want to explore different types of design engineering
    • Are considering design engineering but aren’t sure which discipline might suit you

You don’t need to know which type of design engineer you want to become. This experience gives you the opportunity to explore different disciplines, tackle a real engineering challenge and discover where your interests and skills could take you.
