Job Description

The Severe Accident Advisor provides production and implementation support, guided by the Severe Accident Analysis (SAA) subject matter expertise, particularly with the internal emergency management and resilience functions. In addition, they will develop a well-rounded understanding of the risk and hazard management processes that interface with them, focussing on the Safety Case process, emergency response arrangements and requirements of the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2019. The role is the Technical Support for the SAA programme.

The role has many facets with a significant focus on engagement with plants and associated teams:
• Engage with plant Safety Case Managers and other experts as required across the company.
• Support preparation of, review and presentation of SL & supply chain produced documents.
• Develop as the Technical Lead and subject matter expert for SAA and principal point of contact within SL for Severe Accident Analysis.
• Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others across multiple levels of the organisation, provide support to SAA components relevant to the Sellafield Emergency Management Plans and Procedures teams in pursuit of their emergency management and resilience tasks, including REPPIR submissions.
•Support engagements with ONR and other regulatory and external bodies as required. • Maintain and improve the SAA process and methodology in support of the Head of Analysis and Assessment.


Principal Accountabilities

The varied nature of the role means the candidate must be self-reliant but know when to seek guidance. The role will require an individual who is inherently inquisitive and bases judgement on facts.
• Apply safety case principles to the delivery of the SAA review cycle, supporting the subject matter expertise.
• With the subject matter expertise, manage workloads within the SAA area including any engagements with contractors.
• Author and present reports and papers to governance committees and boards as required.
• Willing to support security consequence assessments as required.
• To support the Head of Analysis and Assessment as required.


Knowledge & Experience

The candidate should have an excellent working knowledge of how safety cases are produced and assessed, building on a foundation of several years working on a nuclear licenced site. This is usually from a safety case, scientific technical or operational support background.


Essential Skills

• The role is primarily technical in nature, which requires a questioning mindset and the ability to challenge.
• There is a need for stakeholder engagement making best use scientific argument founded on a Degree in Chemistry, Physics or Chemical Engineering disciplines.
• Minimum of one-year direct safety case assessment, authoring and or implementation experience. Alternatively, 3 or more years of operational plant experience with a strong safety case implementation component to the work.
• Good Risk Management knowledge and experience.
• Able to read, absorb and analyse information and interpret the impacts of the data quickly and communicate them effectively.
• Work within a small team, whilst being proactive and independently driven.
• Preparation and presentation of technical reports.


Desirable Skills

• On occasion, it is necessary to visit plants to walk-down any issues. The candidate should either have or can readily become a Monitored Worker.
• Prior experience of managing contracts, delivery, contractual and financial controls.
• Knowledge of Project Management principles.
• Knowledge of key processes in major plants and the control measures.
• Any experience of interfacing with regulators and senior management.
• Membership of appropriate professional body.

During the interview, you will also be expected to give a 10 minute presentation on “Discuss the learning from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident and its relevance to the UK Nuclear Industry”

The role is primarily one of supporting and developing subject matter expertise in all topics relating to the SAA process and risk and hazard evaluation in support of REPPIR compliance. The role will allow for some exposure to security, contract, financial and other accountabilities as befits the candidate.

• Develop subject matter expertise for SAA, including the production and checking of SAAs.

Dimensions

• Work collaboratively with and provide support to the Emergency Management preparedness teams in support of emergency management and resilience tasks, including REPPIR submissions and other tasks as appropriate.
• Support the engagements with ONR and other regulatory or external bodies as required
• Identify improvements in the maintenance and development of the SAA process methodology and report proposals to the Head of Analysis and Assessment. From 2025, will be an opportunity to seek the implementation of recommendations after stakeholder engagement.
