Starting Salary: Level 1 – £76,594 with opportunity to earn £82,698. Level 2 – £83,724 with opportunity to earn £90,408. Bonus – annual bonus of up to 15% of base salary based on a combination of company and personal performance.
Location: West Cumbria – with options for on-site and off-site offices.


What will the successful candidate be doing:

We have two roles available for Commissioning Start-up managers at Sellafield Ltd. Both key positions in the Integrated Project teams delivering new capabilities that enable the safe retrieval of legacy materials for eventual long term safe and secure storage.

The Legacy Ponds area, incorporating the Pile Fuel Storage Pond (PFSP) and First Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP) at Sellafield, are two of the site’s four Legacy Pond and Silo facilities. We are focused on safely decommissioning these buildings as part of our hazard and risk reduction programme.

The Box Encapsulation Plant Product Stores (BEPPS) are strategically important to the Sellafield Site. They are key enablers to retrievals from the Pile Fuel Cladding Silo and other donor plants, receiving and storing Intermediate Level Waste in containers and providing a service to the Box Encapsulation Plant.

The Commissioning Start-up Manager is aligned to the Head of Projects for their specified area, carrying out a leadership role in establishing and maintaining a Commissioning Start-up delivery organisation that delivers integrated commissioning start-up for major projects, project portfolios or value streams to achieve smooth transition to operation. You will be accountable to the Head of Projects for the activities required to meet the goals and objectives of Project, Programme, and end user in accordance with Nuclear Site Licence Condition 21 – Commissioning. You will use project management techniques and assurance to demonstrate the required outcomes will be achieved in a timely and cost-effective manner.


The Ideal Candidate:

Successful candidates will require considerable experience over a range of demanding Project delivery, Commissioning, and handover/start-up topics. Experience is required of project delivery requirements (time, cost & quality constraints), verification of technically complex engineering solutions and implementation of arrangements that are needed for successful handover for operation in a heavily regulated industry. This would include being part of the delivery organisation in a relevant or similar industry followed by more senior positions within broader teams where leadership and influencing skills have been demonstrated.

• Extensive experience in managing a large size engineering, technical or operations organisation with demonstrable evidence of successful delivery: typical experience (if not through Project Commissioning) would be delivery of a Senior Project, Operations or Engineering Manager role.
• Understands commissioning arrangements in compliance with Nuclear Site Licence Condition 21.
• Has experience or knowledge of delivering the commissioning work scope to an agreed strategy and plan in a timely and cost-effective manner.
• Can ensure a proactive and balanced approach to safety (nuclear, radiological, conventional, and environmental) to ensure that safety is optimised during Commissioning delivery into Start-up.
• Can develop and maintain effective relationships and communications with key stakeholders at all levels of seniority.
• Effective at leading a team with a strong desire to drive for results.
• Can influence other senior peers to improve.
• Drives input to other project processes, for example, design, HAZOP, risk, contract, estimating and knowledge management.
• Understands the Sellafield gated process.
• Demonstrable evidence of involvement in the delivery of organisational change.

Essential Skills
• HND or equivalent Level 5 qualification in a relevant technical subject OR Incorporated Engineer status Mechanical/Electrical background OR significant experience of delivery (5+ years at a senior level) in a project, engineering, technical or operational role.
• Substantial experience in managing a large or medium size engineering or technical organisation with demonstrable evidence of successful delivery.

Desirable Skills
• Accredited integrated MEng degree or equivalent Level 7 qualification.
• Chartered Engineer status.
• APM PMQ qualified.
• Previous SL experience an advantage
