The ICT Operations Engineer at Sellafield plays a pivotal role in managing and optimising the technical operations within their designated Service Delivery pillar. This position ensures that the Service Delivery systems and components are aligned with business capabilities and Sellafield’s ICT Digital Strategy, providing essential technology solutions that support and drive the achievement of business objectives. The role demands a comprehensive understanding of the Service Delivery pillar components to effectively manage asset lifecycle, operations, risk, and business and supplier relationships.

The ICT Operations Engineer plays a vital role in maintaining the stability, performance, and security of enterprise applications throughout their lifecycle. Operating in a technically complex environment, the role is responsible for third-line support, incident resolution, and proactive management of applications from deployment through to retirement. The engineer works closely with service owners, developers, and infrastructure teams to ensure applications are optimised, patched, and aligned with evolving business needs. Key challenges include managing legacy systems alongside modern platforms, ensuring minimal disruption during upgrades or transitions, and maintaining robust documentation and compliance. The role demands a high level of technical expertise, problem-solving capability, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement in a fast-paced, service-driven environment.

Principal Accountabilities

• Ensuring ICT solutions are fully leveraged, compliant, and cost-effective, within your allocated portfolio, to maximise return on investment & reducing technology debt. Ensuring fit for purpose.
• Overseeing the day-to-day operations of ICT systems, ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance to meet the needs of the Sellafield Mission, including care and maintenance of systems through to decommissioning.
• Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver and maintain robust ICT solutions that align with Sellafield’s strategic objectives and regulatory requirements, through participation and contribution to relevant Application, Delivery and Domain Governance.
• Proactively monitoring system performance and security, identifying potential issues, and implementing timely solutions to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with industry standards.
• Providing expert technical support and guidance to internal & external stakeholders, ensuring that all ICT-related queries and issues are resolved efficiently and effectively. To include Risk, Business Continuity, DR and Information Security.
• Contributing to the continuous improvement of ICT processes and practices, leveraging the latest technologies and methodologies to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
• Liaising with Vendors and ICT Category management, for appropriate and best value license agreements in line with the vendors terms and conditions.
• Approving of financial requests from Business Support for any licensing & Maintenance Support renewals.
• Providing second level specialist support and guidance to colleagues across the Sellafield business (including audit) and support teams, to ensure internal systems work efficiently and meet business needs.
• Maintaining comprehensive documentation of ICT systems, processes, and procedures to support knowledge sharing and continuity of operations.
• Participating in the planning and execution of ICT projects, contributing to deliverables being met on time, within scope, and budget.
• Ensuring adherence to Sellafield’s policies, promoting a culture of safety and responsibility within the ICT team.
• Staying abreast of industry trends and advancements in ICT, recommending and implementing innovative solutions to support Sellafield’s vision of becoming a world leader in solving complex nuclear challenges.
• Accountable for Line managing team performance, development, resource allocation and compliance with organisational policies, including oversight of temporary and permanent staffing.
• Conduct regular Asset Portfolio Reviews (APRs) to support and manage Asset lifecycle, operations, and risk.
• Facilitate and provide SME knowledge to the Asset Domain Governance meetings, to ensure appropriate asset lifecycle and new demands are reviewed and approved for ISO Demand process submission.

Authorities & Dimensions

• Act as a key point of contact for ICT operations, ensuring seamless communication and collaboration across departments to support Sellafield’s mission of safe and secure site stewardship.
• Oversee the implementation and maintenance of ICT systems, ensuring they align with Sellafield’s strategic objectives and industry standards, with reference to Asset Lifecycle Roadmaps and Strategic plan.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, maintaining the integrity and security of ICT systems and data.
• Develop and implement policies and processes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of ICT operations, supporting Sellafield’s Mission and commitment to environmental remediation and infrastructure support.
• Monitor and evaluate the performance of ICT systems, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing solutions to enhance operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners and vendors to ensure the delivery of high-quality ICT services and solutions, aligned with Sellafield’s values and objectives.
• Mentor ICT professionals, promoting a culture of excellence and professional development within the department.
• Report on ICT operations and performance to senior management, providing insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
• Ensure all Asset procurement in enacted and remains valid to maintain compliance and continuity of services.
• Accountable for Line managing team performance, development, resource allocation and compliance with organisational policies, including oversight of temporary and permanent staffing.
• Responsible for driving continuous service improvement activities across allocated services.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Knowledge:
• Comprehensive understanding of ICT systems and infrastructure.
• Familiarity with industry-specific software and tools used in nuclear decommissioning and waste management.
• Awareness of regulatory requirements and safety standards pertinent to the nuclear industry.

Skills:
• Proficient in diagnosing and resolving technical issues related to ICT operations.
• Strong analytical skills to assess system performance and implement improvements.
• Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
• Ability to manage multiple assets simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience or willingness to gain, in ICT operations within a high-security environment, preferably in regulated industries.
• Demonstrated track record of implementing solutions that enhance operational efficiency and security.
• Experience in working within an organisation with a focus on safety and compliance.
• Proven experience or recognised potential in leading a team to affectively delivery a business ICT strategy roadmap within agreed timeframes, budget, and scope.
