Design Engineering graduate programme

From emergent, on-plant situations requiring design support and advice, to tackling some of industry’s most unique challenges.

At Sellafield Ltd, Design Engineering offers graduates a diverse range of experiences, from addressing unexpected on-site situations that require design support to managing modifications on legacy facilities and contributing to large multi-million-pound new build projects. Design Engineers tackle some of the industry’s most unique and challenging tasks, facilitating high hazard reduction in a safe, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective manner. The scope of work varies by discipline, requiring graduates to demonstrate their technical expertise through the production of design deliverables. Additionally, Design Engineers should display the right behavioural attributes, maintain a questioning attitude, and understand project lifecycles from concept design to operation and decommissioning.

  • During this two-year program, you’ll rotate through various business units, gaining hands-on engineering experience. You’ll manage real projects with accountability for quality and deadlines. The work varies based on each business unit’s requirements. Beyond core projects, you’ll participate in STEM activities inside and outside the organisation, and there will also be opportunities for you to get involved with work outside of your direct project delivery, such as becoming a member of the graduate council or a Centre of Expertise.

  • Typically design graduates will initially aim to become a Design Engineer. Then look to seek more responsibility and ownership by becoming discipline lead engineer for specific tasks and projects. This experience is well suited for progression towards Chartered status and a senior or responsible engineering role.
