Design Engineering

Learn more about our design engineering work experience programme available in West Cumbria & Warrington.

Are you passionate about problem solving and creative thinking? Curious about how engineering shapes the future of one of the UK’s most complex industrial sites?

Our award-winning work experience programme offers you an exciting and rewarding opportunity to gain hands-on insight into the world of Engineering Design at Sellafield Ltd.

What to Expect

Design Engineers use creativity and technical skills (such as maths and science) to solve problems by designing things like processes, machines, buildings, or systems that work safely and efficiently. They turn ideas into real solutions by planning, testing, and improving designs to help make the world better.

You’ll work as part of a multi-disciplinary design team to tackle a real-life engineering challenge that we face at Sellafield. Together, you’ll define and develop innovative solutions- just like our engineers do every day.

You will work with Sellafield graduates, apprentices and industrial placement students to try each of our Design Engineering disciplines:

  • Chemical & Process Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Control, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering
  • Civil & Structural Engineering

You will also get an insight into the Sellafield Advanced Business Analytics (SABA) team.

This is a unique opportunity to experience how different engineering specialisms collaborate to solve complex problems.

Meet the Experts

Throughout the week, you’ll connect with members of our design engineering community, gaining valuable insight into the diverse roles that contribute to our mission.
