Nuclear Welding Inspection & Assurance work experience

Create. Inspect. Assure.

Discover the engineering, science and attention to detail behind welding and learn how inspection and assurance help make sure components and structures are built to the required standards.

Our Nuclear Welding Inspection & Assurance Work Experience programme gives you the opportunity to explore the world of welding, materials and engineering inspection at Sellafield Ltd.

Throughout the programme, you’ll discover why welding inspection is important to the safety and strength of structures and facilities, explore the science of metals and welding, and gain insight into how inspection supports major engineering projects.

You’ll also experience a real-world engineering environment while developing skills including teamwork, critical thinking and attention to detail.

The programme takes place in a building on the main Sellafield site at Seascale and is suitable for learners in Years 10 to 13. You must be 15 at the time of your placement to obtain the required escorted visitor pass.

  • Welding is used to join components and structures, but producing the weld is only part of the story.

Inspection and assurance help provide confidence that welded structures meet the standards required of them.

During your experience, you’ll explore the relationship between engineering, materials, welding, inspection and quality and discover how these areas contribute to complex projects.

    You’ll have opportunities to explore:

    • How welding is used within engineering
    • The science and properties of metals
    • Why the quality of a weld matters
    • How inspection supports engineering projects
    • How advanced technology can support inspection
    • Why attention to detail and critical thinking are important in this type of work
  • Discover the science behind welding: Explore metals and welding and discover how engineering and science come together when components and structures are made.

Understand inspection: Find out why welded components need to be inspected and explore the role inspection plays in supporting the safety and strength of structures and facilities.

Explore technology: Discover how advanced technology can be used within welding inspection and gain insight into a technical area of modern engineering.

Experience a real engineering environment: Gain hands-on insight within a real-world environment and discover how engineering, science and manufacturing knowledge can come together.

Meet the professionals: Have the opportunity to meet and learn from the Nuclear welding, inspection and assurance team, including current apprentices.

  • Throughout your experience, you’ll have opportunities to develop skills including:

    • Attention to detail, recognising why accuracy matters
    • Critical thinking, considering information and evidence
    • Problem-solving, thinking through engineering challenges
    • Teamwork, working effectively with others
    • Communication, sharing information and ideas
    • Technical awareness, developing your understanding of welding, materials and inspection
    • Career awareness, understanding how engineering, science and manufacturing connect

Most importantly, you’ll gain a better understanding of the different people, skills and expertise involved in making sure engineering work is completed to the standards required.

  • There’s much more to welding than making a weld.

The world of welding, inspection and assurance brings together practical skills, engineering knowledge, materials science, inspection and technology.

Your experience could help you discover an interest in areas such as:

    • Welding and welding engineering
    • Welding inspection
    • Quality and assurance
    • Materials and metallurgy
    • Manufacturing
    • Engineering inspection
    • Engineering and technical careers

You don’t need to know which technical career is right for you.

Use your experience to explore the practical, scientific and engineering sides of welding and inspection, ask questions and discover which aspects interest you most.

  • This programme could be right for you if you:

    • Enjoy finding out how things are made
    • Are curious about how things work
