Job Description

Data Stewards are responsible for defining, implementing, and managing data governance frameworks, policies, and standards to support ISO/ICTs, and Sellafield Ltd.’s, strategic goals. They ensure the quality and integrity of data by monitoring and managing risk to information assets, resolving any deviations from agreed policy, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

In this way, Data Stewards play a key part in promoting a data-driven and data-literate culture throughout ISO/ICT and Sellafield Ltd. Working with stakeholders across the business, they enable a safe, secure, and consistent approach to data policy interpretation and enactment.

Principal Accountabilities

• Design, implement, and maintain data governance frameworks, including processes, policies, and standards, to enable effective data management in line with relevant regulations and best practices.
• Understand and apply data governance across the data lifecycle, from acquisition and creation to archival and disposal, in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. This includes assessing and cleansing enterprise datasets for publication and maintaining a register of them.
• Monitor, measure and report on data quality to ensure that data is fit for purpose. This includes implementing data quality validation rules, cleansing procedures, and actively correcting flaws that cannot be addressed by automated means.
• Monitor compliance and manage risk associated with the application of data governance frameworks. This may include analysing the impact if a data standard is breached and advising on risk tolerance.
• Work with internal and external stakeholders, including subject matter experts across the business, to develop and enforce data governance processes, policies, and standards.
• Champion data governance learning and training to increase data literacy and educate stakeholders on data management practices, policies, and procedures.
• Participate in appropriate data governance, assurance and compliance forums as required. This may include, but is not limited to, inputting into regular Data Steward Council meetings and the Enterprise Data Governance Board (EDGB).
• Continuously identify areas for improvement across data governance frameworks to increase data quality and trustworthiness and ensure clarity and accessibility for all stakeholders.
• Maintain an up-to-date understanding of the latest trends and best practices in data tools, analysis techniques, and data usage, and support their implementation where appropriate.

Authorities & Dimensions

• Data Steward II to have line manager responsibilities of 1-5 roles.
• Data Steward II can act as the delegate for the relevant Data and Dev Manager as required.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification or experience in a relevant field, such as IT, technology, or business management.
• Previous experience and/or knowledge of data governance, data ethics, and data management, or a related area.
• Experience designing and implementing data governance frameworks, processes, policies, and standards.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to form collaborative relationships.
• Effective communication skills, able to translate complex technical concepts into business language.
• Strong analytical skills, able to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement.

Desirable Skills

• ITIL Foundation certified, or higher/advanced qualifications, or equivalent.
• Previous experience in a leadership or team management role.
• Membership of the British Computer Society, or other equivalent professional body.
• Understanding of Sellafield Ltd, including its operations and ICT estate or equivalent.
• Understanding of Alteryx and DocuSign.
