Job Description The Digital Engineering Capability (DEC) is a department within Sellafield’s Engineering Directorate, tasked with overseeing the development and implementation of modern digital tools and techniques to support Sellafield’s projects/assets during the full lifecycle phases. The Development Lead role exists to support the Head of the Digital Engineering Capability in setting and implementing a cohesive software application strategy, and in underpinning that strategy with appropriate policies, procedures, and continuous improvement activities. The role holder will report directly to the Head of the DEC and will in turn manage direct reports that act as a Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) for digital engineering applications. This involves providing daily support to Application System Owners and Key Users in the implementation, configuration, and use of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) applications, providing support in the resolution of helpdesk incidents related to CAE applications, and for proactive digital tools lifecycle management from deployment through to retirement. It is expected that a small proportion of the role will involve the direct support of Sellafield projects with the specification, deployment, and management of the DEC model for digital project delivery and implementation of the strategic vision and mission of the Capability. The role requires wide-ranging interactions with stakeholders across project delivery, construction, and operations business units, as well as the ability the clearly communicate complex concepts and topics to a range of technical and non-technical groups. Key challenges include managing legacy systems alongside modern platforms, ensuring minimal disruption during upgrades or transitions, and maintaining robust documentation and compliance. The role demands a high level of technical expertise, problem solving capability, and a proactive approach to continuous improvement in a fast-paced, service-driven environment. Principal Accountabilities • Oversee the creation and implementation of the software application pipelines for Sellafield’s CAE product suites, ensuring that their use-case, support arrangements and future states are well-defined and communicated to the business and its suppliers. • Support the Head of DEC in managing the continuous development of the Sellafield Digital Engineering integrated application system map – the template for how all SL’s Digital Engineering software applications work with each other to support project delivery. • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver and maintain robust engineering Design software tools solutions that align with Sellafield’s strategic objectives and regulatory requirements, through participation and contribution to relevant Application, Delivery and Domain Governance. • Represent the DEC at events and conferences as required. Also, regularly interfaces with relevant technical / engineering networks to support the continuous improvement of processes and practices, leveraging the latest technologies and methodologies to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness. • Work with the DEC Assurance Lead to capture, co-ordinate and communicate LFE coming in from the various system owners and DEC engagements. • To work with the relevant Vendors, ISO Applications, Architecture and Service Delivery Leads to co-ordinate the submission of DEC requests, new demands and associated ISO activities that enable compliant and cost-effective solutions within allocated portfolio. • Maintaining comprehensive documentation of applicable processes, and procedures to support knowledge sharing and continuity of operations. • Overseeing the day-to-day operations of related Information & Communications Technology (ICT) systems, specialist support/guidance across the Sellafield business and support teams, to ensure high availability, reliability, and performance of relevant software applications/systems to meet the business needs of the Sellafield Mission. • Line management responsibilities including the development of the future digital engineering applications SMEs by supporting the Digital Engineering Apprentice Pathway. • Leading delivery of assigned digital engineering work packages and improvement activities. • Developing and managing project plans against cost and time for delivery of digital engineering tasks. Monitoring and reporting progress in terms of time and cost, implementing corrective actions and recovery strategies where required. Supporting the delivery of key targets and operating plan milestones. • Providing expert advice on digital engineering by engaging with supply chain partners, delivery teams, and external organisations to help them solve technology challenges and incorporate learning and best practice. Knowledge & Experience • Proven digital engineering experience demonstrating a record of successful delivery including recent support positions guiding technical and non-technical personnel. Experience of supporting digital engineering tools for delivering multi-discipline engineering solutions. • Comprehensive understanding of industry-specific digital engineering design software tools & infrastructure including relevant regulatory requirements and safety standards pertinent to the high-security environment. • Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders. • Strong analytical skills to assess digital tools system performance/solutions and proficient in resolving technical ICT related issues including implementation of continuous service improvement activities. Authorities & Dimensions: • Act as a key point of contact within the DEC for all CAE and Digital Engineering applications, development roadmaps and associated policies to support Sellafield’s mission of safe and secure site stewardship. • Working with the Head of Digital Engineering in the delivery of technical digital engineering activities in line with the Digital Engineering Capability Implementation Plan and Digital Asset Management Programme. • Ensure delivery of specialist digital engineering work packages assigned by the Head of Digital Engineering, ensuring that the work is delivered to the appropriate quality, cost, and timeline, and is compliant with the appropriate standards, regulatory and legal requirements. • Stakeholder engagement and building relationships with vendors, specialist organisations/institutions, programmes, projects, supply chain, commercial frameworks and regulatory bodies to ensure digital engineering requirements and standards are met and LFE is captured and employed. • To support in the development and maintenance of competent and specialist resources to ensure digital engineering activities are carried out by SQEP people throughout the project / task lifecycle, supply chain and frameworks. • Leading, mentoring, training, career development and performance management of direct reports. • To prevent the procurement and/or deployment of tools, processes or related services that do not align with the strategic vision of the DEC, or its application system map. • To specify (in collaboration with the ISO Applications, Architecture and Service Delivery Leads) the DEC requests for hardware, software, and associated support including architecture modifications necessary to achieve the vision and mission of the DEC. Essential Skills – Graduate (minimum BSc or BEng, preferred MSc or MEng) in relevant digital engineering or Building Information Modelling (BIM) discipline. – Member of relevant Digital Engineering Professional Institution e.g., CIBSE and actively pursuing/willingness to gain Chartership. – Significant experience working in roles where knowledge of digital engineering tools along with their supporting processes, guidance and training is a key attribute. – Significant experience working within a highly regulated and quality assured system in roles where professional judgement and problem-solving techniques is the key attribute. – Demonstrable application of specialist knowledge and staying abreast of industry trends and advancements in ICT: recommending and implementing innovative solutions to support Sellafield’s vision of becoming a world leader in solving complex nuclear challenges and delivering innovation. – Significant evidence of working collaboratively to deliver digital engineering and ICT solutions in specialist area to enhance operational efficiency. – Proven team leadership experience or recognised potential in leading a team to effectively support digital engineering tools/solutions, deliver improvements and develop strategy roadmaps within agreed timeframes, budget and scope. – Broad scanning and Knowledge from outside the organisation to provide improvements e.g., Engineering Design applications integration and obsolescence management. – Demonstrable experience of Implementation, capture and storage of company knowledge including LFE. – Strong understanding and experience of information/electronic document management systems utilised within design, construction, commissioning, and operations & maintenance. – Comprehensive knowledge of digital engineering tools, ICT systems/infrastructure and techniques Sellafield uses across the design disciplines and supply chain. – Ambition to drive the need for change and to identify and deliver functional improvements. – Proficient in the use of CAE applications. – Ability to identify and solve problems related to ICT operations. – Demonstrable experience of working collaboratively with the supply chain and internal stakeholders to deliver successful ICT related projects. – Mentors and coaches’ future specialists to ensure effective knowledge sharing and transfer. – Thorough understanding of the importance of nuclear safety and security and demonstrable track record of adherence to relevant policies and promoting a culture of safety and responsibility within specialist area.
