Job Description

1. Role Purpose

To manage the efficient, effective and safe delivery of all Nuclear Solutions Group support activities in line with Company, Commercial, Statutory, Regulatory and Site Licence requirements.

2. Deliverables

Promote and support overall nuclear safety (along with other areas of safety – conventional, industrial, radiological, environmental) by maintaining a safe operating envelope through ensuring all work activities are to site standards, policies, processes, and procedures.

Manage the motivation, personal development and performance of direct reports to ensure high performing and cohesive team, ensuring that all Engineering support have the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out tasks and responsibilities efficiently, effectively and safely through successful completion of relevant training.

Liaise with internal customers and stakeholders to understand their needs and priorities to manage overall work schedules, resource planning and plant requirements.

Oversee the medium to long term resource needs and develop workforce plans accordingly to ensure the right resources are in the right places to deliver required work and improve efficiency.

Oversee the investigation of safety events and sentence ATLAS events to identify root cause and ensure appropriate corrective actions are identified and implemented to resolve issues.

Undertake inspections, observations and assurance activities to identify and highlight performance gaps with Nuclear Solutions Group, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of issues, including escalation of significant concerns to senior management.

Identify, assess, and understand concerns regarding performance and potential cross-site impacts of enterprise activities, ensuring appropriate escalation to Head of department when required.

Provide independent challenge and advice on delivery approach and performance, providing an independent view to support informed and timely decision making.

Identify, facilitate and lead Nuclear Solutions Group improvement programmes at local business level to support delivery of site improvement programmes. Ensure LFE is disseminated and acted upon.

Actively coach, mentor and manage the Engineering support community to assist with knowledge transfer and strengthening of the engineering support capability.

Contribute to the continuous improvement programme and the governance and control framework to ensure safe delivery of engineering activities against defined standards, company objectives and key performance indicators.

Drive standards and efficiency during delivery of activities, ensuring delivery issues are resolved. Meet customer, process owner, and business expectations, maintaining strong working relationships across all levels of the business.

In addition to the above role holders are expected to fulfil other duties and tasks that are commensurate with their grade assigned to them by management to ensure efficient engineering and maintenance delivery and the success of the team / organisation.

Knowledge & Experience

Candidate must:

Possess solid technical knowledge of their area of engineering support, including maintenance processes and the integration of support services with core engineering activities.

Plan and coordinates support activities to align with engineering and maintenance needs. Focuses on short to medium term planning, ensuring resources (external and internal) are available, processes are streamlined, and support activities are well organised to facilitate core engineering work.

Manage moderately complex support tasks, ensuring that engineering and maintenance operations are effectively supported. Be able to handle routine challenges and makes decisions that improve efficiency within established guidelines.

Communicate effectively with engineering teams and support staff and management, ensuring that information flows smoothly and that support activities align with operational needs. Influences within their scope to improve processes and promote collaboration.

Addressees’ operational problems within the support function, utilising established methods to resolve issues that impact daily activities. Analyses operational challenges and implements practical solutions that enhance support, efficiency and effectiveness.

Operates with autonomy within their area, managing support operations and making decisions that directly affect their team’s performance. Ensure that support activities are aligned with the immediate requirements of the engineering and maintenance functions.

Essential Skills

Has a strong operational understanding and can effectively oversee daily support activities. Focuses on ensuring immediate needs are met and operations run smoothly.

Manages asset-related support tasks with a focus on routine maintenance, condition based monitoring and immediate asset reliability.

Manages a team, providing guidance and support to achieve operational goals. Focuses on day-to-day leadership and team development.

Has successful experience of writing, tendering and managing Commercial frameworks such as Dynamic Purchasing System and LINC.

Involved in planning within their area, focusing on the medium term and ensuring alignment with immediate objectives.

Solves problems within the scope of their team or area, typically addressing operational challenges with a tactical approach. Proven experience of workshop facilitation with internal and external customers.

Communicates effectively within their team, organisation and immediate stakeholders, focusing on operational updates and guidance.

An ability to manage jobs, resource and teams right across the Sellafield site.

Desirable Skills

Possesses a more strategic view being involved in building a strategy.

A knowledge of Additive Manufacturing and 3D printing and how it can be utilised in the Nuclear Industry.

A understanding of Condition Based Maintenance.
