Job Description

Mechanical Engineering design covers a range of activities, project stages and delivery mechanisms including:

• Develop engineering schemes to support the selection of the viable option during Appraise & Select.
• Define, implement and deliver engineering design work packages that are safe, legally compliant, fit for purpose and meet functional and business requirements to contribute to the successful completion of Engineering Design tasks or projects.
• Assist the discharging of Intelligent Customer duties to support the production of design deliverables by the supply chain (as appropriate to the delivery model).

Principal Accountabilities

The Mechanical Design Engineer will be required to:

• Deliver work consistent with the requirements of the staged business model, effective risk management principles and in full alignment with the Project, Study or Task.
• Deliver work compliant with the relevant legislation, appropriate design and engineering standards, policies and practices to ensure that the design meets all functional, safety and environmental requirements.
• Deliver the work package in terms of cost, schedule, safety and quality and develop accurate and timely reports to ensure the work is documented appropriately and delivered against plan.
• Communicate effectively with other engineering disciplines, system engineers, Mechanical Capability and other stakeholders during the delivery of engineering solutions.
• Assess engineering and technical risks, contribute to the development of mitigation plans to ensure the work is delivered in a safe manner against the plan.
• Promote best practice and the sharing of LFE to the Mechanical Community.
• Support/lead teams in the delivery of work packages.

Mechanical Design Engineers:

All graded at 3B Lower, Risley or Sellafield Roles available are as follows:
• Project Facing Design Office: Lead Design Engineer (2 Off)
• Engineering Design Capability; Crane Subject Matter Expert (1 Off)
• Engineering Design Capability; Packages Subject Matter Expert (1 Off)

Essential Skills

The skills required will vary depending upon the exact nature and level of seniority of the specific role in question:

• IMechE accredited degree (Mechanical Engineering preferred)
• Incorporated Engineer IMechE or Chartered Engineer with a plan to achieve Chartership within 12 months.
• Relevant Mechanical Engineering Design experience.
• Demonstratable generation and delivery of engineering solutions which meet Functional, Safety and legal requirements.
• Operational and/or Construction / Commissioning Site experience.
• For each Role the appropriate knowledge must be demonstrate.

Desirable Skills

The skills required will vary depending upon the exact nature and level of seniority of the specific role in question. The more senior positions require stronger leadership skills. Typically the desirable skills required for a Mechanical Design Engineer include:

• Experience of working in a multi-discipline environment.
• Project experience and understanding how engineering solutions fit into the wider project value stream.
• Working knowledge of Sellafield Gated Process.
• A sound understanding of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals.
• Experience in contributing to/developing programmes and estimates to support project/task planning.
• Familiarity with the Sellafield site and the interconnectivity between plants.
• Operational experience / troubleshooting on an operational plant
• Commissioning experience / knowledge and experience of how the actual operation may differ from design.
• Effective communication skills and the ability to convey information to a range of stakeholders.
• Experience in team management and leadership.
• Demonstrable LFE and/or supporting the development of the Mechanical Engineering Community.
