Retrieval of waste from the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo (MSSS) started in 2022 from a single compartment with one Silo Emptying machine. In the near future we aim to ramp-up the retrievals process from more waste storage compartments in the facility; using another two Silo Emptying machines. This will allow us to retrieve more waste types spread across 21 more compartments; and will require us to undertake a number of first of a kind operations and activities.

The MSSS Technical team provides technical underpinning and support to:-

• Ongoing safe storage of wastes in the MSSS facility;
• waste retrievals operations including learning from ongoing retrievals to reduce programme risks;
• transfer of wastes in skips to interim storage in line with CfA;
• preparation for new retrievals capability and operations.

In addition to developing technical expertise, the role provides excellent opportunities to raise your profile within Sellafield Ltd and the wider NDA group.

Principal Accountabilities

• Development and delivery of learning plans – ensuring required data is collected, analysed and reported to update technical baseline and develop process improvements • Support investigation and resolution of emergent issues on plant
• Support to transfer of MSSS ILW waste skips to interim storage facilities (EPS) including review and resolution of Conditions for Acceptance (CfA) issues for non-conforming skips.
• Containment monitoring through mass balance, using standard tools
• Support start of retrievals of new waste types and improvement projects

Knowledge & Experience

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated delivery of credible technical work at the appropriate grade.
• Relevant experience working with technical teams, Knowledge of Retrievals mission and challenges.
• Relevant technical qualifications, Must be numerate, articulate, and able to communicate well with Supply Chain, Stakeholders and Regulators.
• Knowledge of the Sellafield Ltd business.
• Data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of information.
• Writing of technical reports and papers for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to work in an active area and achieve monitored worker status

Desirable Skills

• Experience working within an operations environment.
• Experience working with external stakeholders and regulators.
• Member of relevant professional body.
