The Low Active Effluent Management Group (LAEMG) Strategy and Technical Team within Spent Fuel and Effluent Management (SF&EM) are offering an exciting opportunity to move into a new role. Applications are welcomed from individuals currently within the technical profession with relevant experience.

The LAEMG Plant Facing Technical Team provide technical support to a wide variety of facilities including the Enhanced Actinide Removal Plant (EARP), Solvent Treatment Plant (STP), Segregated Effluent Treatment Plant (SETP), Salt Evaporator and Medium Active Storage (SEMAS) and Waste Packaging and Encapsulation Plant (WPEP). The support provided to the facilities is broad with opportunities to get involved in underpinning changes to operations, conducting technical investigations and assessing plant performance.

It is an interesting time to join LAEMG Technical with work underway to redefine the operational philosophy of the facilities in the new era of post reprocessing. The team provide technical underpinning to the continued operation of the LAEMG facilities. Opportunities also exist to provide technical support to the delivery of a range of studies as well as providing underpinning assessments for Post Operational Clean Out (POCO) and Initial Decommissioning (ID) of the LAEMG facilities.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to solve novel and challenging technical issues within the SF&EM directorate and be at the forefront of defining and implementing new approaches to effluent management.

This role not only provides technical support for LAEMG but will also provide the candidate with a broad understanding of the Sellafield site through engagement with donor facilities. A key requirement of the role is collaboration not only with Operations but many other disciplines including Environmental, Engineering and Safety Case.

The role is primarily based in Albion Square but with expected regular travel to Sellafield Site and other West Cumbria offices.

Principal Accountabilities

• Provide technical support to ensure the safe and optimised/effective operation of the LAEMG facilities.
• Gathering and interpreting plant data.
• Support investigation and resolution of emergent issues within the LAEMG facilities.
• Support the preparation for and implementation of POCO and ID of the LAEMG facilities.
• Provide technical support to LAEMG donor facilities in the production of relevant technical and best available technique (BAT) assessments to ensure process compatibility.
• Production and checking of technical documentation including reports, justifications and calculations.
• Effective stakeholder communication and management.
• Support identification and delivery of plant and process improvements.
• Developing plant trials and supporting implementation of changes on plant.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated delivery of work autonomously or leading on packages of technical work.
• Relevant STEM degree level qualification or equivalent years’ experience in a technical role.
• Effective communication skills and experience engaging with a range of stakeholders. • Experience of data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of information. • Experience of technical paper writing for both technical and non-technical audiences and approval through relevant governance.
• SC clearance or the ability to achieve it.

Desirable Skills

• Knowledge of LAEMG mission.
• Knowledge of effluent management processes.
• Experience working within an operations environment.
• Experience working with external stakeholders.
• Member of relevant professional body.
