Job Description The Quality Manager is the lead contact for all quality matters within their assigned area of the business, managing a team of quality professionals. The role ensures that quality services and advice are effectively delivered, and that all activities are defined, planned, and executed in line with the Sellafield Ltd (SL) quality policy, strategy and standards. The Quality Manager champions a culture of safe and predictable delivery through quality assurance, and continuous improvement. Principal Accountabilities Establishing quality standards and management systems • Establish and maintain management systems aligned to prevailing obligations and stakeholder expectations, to enable the effective delivery of business objectives. • Promote the effective application of quality management systems within SL and the supply chain, and ensure quality standards are effectively communicated and implemented. Enhancing culture and focus for Quality • Strengthen the quality culture by engaging with stakeholders, delivering targeted education and training, and ensuring visibility of quality in the field, to build understanding and leadership for quality. • Develop local quality strategies in their area(s) of responsibility, translating the SL Quality Policy into specific actionable quality objectives, with consideration of context, risks and opportunities. • Promote early engagement and collaboration, a maintaining active dialogue with stakeholders (including regulators) to ensure quality remains central to decision-making. Mobilising Quality advice and services • Deploy quality advice and services across area(s) of responsibility, including ‘bought in’ supply chain resources, to enable right-first-time (RFT) delivery. • Ensure that intelligent customer responsibilities are fulfilled for Quality, throughout the procurement lifecycle, to minimise the risks of poor supply chain quality performance. This includes ensuring specified requirements are effectively disseminated, contributing to tender evaluations and contract opening up meetings, and reviewing contractor(s) arrangements. Applying quality assurance and control • Implement risk-based quality assurance and control to confirm that products, outputs and deliverables meet specified requirements, and take action when non-conformances arise. • Oversee delivery of quality across their area(s) of responsibility, acting as the point of escalation for quality issues and working with customers and stakeholders to identify and implement effective solutions / improvements. • Ensure quality records are compiled and managed in compliance with legal and contractual obligations. Providing assurance and oversight • Establish risk-based assurance programmes (both internal and supply chain) and key performance indicators (KPIs), to monitor performance, identify deviations, and drive improvement. • Escalate significant quality issues to senior management via Quality Leads, and support management reviews to inform decisions on corrective actions and improvements. Driving continuous improvement • Lead and embed improvements that address risks, opportunities and business context to deliver tangible business benefits. • Ensure quality-related issues are reviewed / investigated to inform actions and prevent recurrence. •Share quality successes and lessons learned across SL and the supply chain, and proactively use LFE (learning from experience) to improve quality performance and customer satisfaction. Knowledge & Experience Essential Skills • Relevant academic or professional qualification, such as a degree in quality management or engineering, or certification as an Independent Auditor. Membership of the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) or similar is expected, though substantial experience may offset lower-level qualifications. • Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in quality or closely related roles, ideally within regulated and technically complex environments such as nuclear, aerospace, or defence. • Proven leadership capability, including managing teams in operational or project settings, or leading cross-functional groups to deliver quality improvements and strategic initiatives. • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to build trust, influence stakeholders at all levels, and drive alignment on quality objectives across diverse teams. • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, enabling clear articulation of quality expectations, performance, and improvement plans to technical and non-technical audiences. • Deep understanding of quality management systems, with hands-on experience in developing, implementing, and continuously improving standards in engineering, manufacturing, or project environments. • Auditing expertise, including formal training and practical experience as an internal or external auditor, with the ability to identify non-conformances and drive corrective actions. • Performance monitoring experience, using KPIs and metrics to assess quality outcomes, identify trends, and inform strategic decisions and improvement programmes. Desirable Skills • Commercial and supply chain awareness, with experience fulfilling intelligent customer responsibilities and managing supplier quality performance throughout the procurement lifecycle. • Experience implementing Lean, 5-Sigma or ISO standardisation experience. • Experience in conducting investigation. • Knowledge and /or experience of quality inspection techniques.
