Job Description

The Safety Case Advisor (SCA) supports the Safety Case Manager (SCM) in overseeing the implementation, maintenance, review, and withdrawal of the Nuclear Safety Case, and contributes to its development when needed. They undertake this in line with relevant Sellafield limited guidance and procedures, relevant legislation, good practice, and business requirements.

The SCA role has a growth pathway in place which takes a trainee from a B4B Entry SCA to a B4A Fully Accomplished SCA. This is demonstrated over a approx. 3-5 year period and through gaining a deep understanding of the Safety Case process and methods and evidence in applying these in different scenarios.

The current vacancies are in: Infrastructure, WVP, PFCS and MSSS – however, please note that we are a mobile profession and you will be required to move to different plants in your career in order to broaden your experience, gain appropriate evidence along the pathway and support business needs.

This is a key role that provides operational support to the business. Any activity involving nuclear material should consider the requirement for a Nuclear Safety Case. While the role is varied, it requires significant reading and report writing, which applicants should consider before applying. It is particularly well suited to individuals who enjoy problem-solving.

Principal Accountabilities

Support the Safety Case Manager in Managing the Nuclear Safety Case to ensure Nuclear Safety, legal compliance and efficient and effective operations and project delivery through all relevant lifecycle phases.

Ensure internal and external stakeholder engagement (at varying levels of seniority) to secure stakeholder support and build confidence in any proposed approach.

Seeks and shares learning (internal to the profession, within the wider business and external to the business) to identify any opportunities for improvement or innovation in their Safety Case area.

Maintains a broad awareness of business and profession drivers in order to ensure Safety Case Management approaches align with current business needs, context and strategic drivers. Challenging approaches when necessary to achieve a Safety Case that best enables the mission.

Assists in the development, maintenance, assurance and optimisation of SL’s Nuclear Safety Case arrangements to ensure that arrangements reflect industry relevant good practice and are flexible enough to enable the mission (for example- by providing learning, experience and technical opinion on the arrangements and at times, leading on the development of methods/ processes/guidance).

Supports the development and maintenance of the capability for Safety Case facility teams to ensure a healthy pipeline of technical resources for the future (for example by acting as a mentor/ inputting in to training and briefing).

Note: The accountabilities outlined in this job description are not exhaustive. Position holders may be required to undertake other work-related activities commensurate with their grade and skills which are necessary to fulfil the job purpose. This may include deputising for their Line Manager when required.

Essential Skills

• Degree or equivalent technical qualification or equivalent experience.
• Good grasp of SL operations, business areas, and related projects.
• Effective communicator with strong stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable Skills

• Fully qualified SCA (as demonstrated by completion of the growth pathway and its supporting arrangements) with broad safety case experience.
• Strong knowledge and application of relevant Safety Case Process, Methods and Guidance (associated with Managing the Nuclear Safety Case).
• Deep understanding of local safety cases and wider business context of how the safety case enables the mission.
• Strong grasp of broader Safety Case Processes, Methods and Guidance and its link to safety case implementation, maintenance, and review.
• Experience with regulatory interactions, including experience with how the regulator permission and inspect SL.
• Familiar with INSA engagement and review processes.
• Strong coaching and mentoring skills.
• Proven use of safety case processes and guidance across multiple business areas.
• Demonstrated delivery of safety case improvements.
• Broad understanding of safety case principles across major Sellafield facilities and challenges of high hazard reduction.
• Good knowledge of project lifecycles, gated processes, and integration of safety requirements across stages and functions.
