Safety Cases form the backbone of nuclear safety at Sellafield, helping develop safe solutions for projects and maintain safe conditions on our facilities.

The Safety Case is not only a fundamental requirement of our licence to operate, but essential in our understanding of hazards and safety controls.

Safety Case professionals work on projects and facilities site-wide and through the full facility lifecycle from design, through operations, to decommissioning and demolition.

They are responsible for not only understanding and analysing the nuclear hazards and risks that could occur but identifying how safety can be managed and ensuring robust controls are implemented in practice.

The Safety Case Manager is responsible for the management of Safety Cases on behalf of the Safety Case Owner.

This role includes accountability for implementation, maintenance and review of these safety cases, in accordance with relevant legislation, good practice and business needs.

The role holder will be required to provide high quality safety case advice to all stakeholders and ensure that the safety case is managed efficiently and effectively whilst utilising the Safety Case profession behaviours and values.

Principal Accountabilities

Typical tasks undertaken by Safety Case Managers include, but not limited to:
• Management of singular or multiple nuclear safety cases, including implementation, review, and ongoing maintenance of the safety case to ensure its currency and validity.
• Develop, implement, and maintain a clear strategy for the ongoing management of the safety case.
• Provide high quality safety case advice to all stakeholders.
• Identify and drive improvement initiatives on safety case understanding and implementation in the workplace.
• Sponsor relevant nuclear safety case documentation through appropriate governance routes, in line with project and programmatic expectations.
• Proactively engage with both the Safety Case Owner and Head of Profession for Safety Cases to ensure effective safety case management.
• Support all pillars of the safety cases profession, including Capability and Process and Methods activities as required.

• Significant evidence of understanding and application of the Nuclear Safety Case process.
• Experience of a leadership role.
• Experience of delivering work within in a technical/complex industrial environment.
• Experience of working in a highly regulated environment.
• Experience of delivering outcomes through others (and developing others).
• Experience of delivering to challenging timescales.
• Experience of building relationships with a variety of different stakeholders.
• Strong communication skills and a variety of communicating styles, able to adapt style to different stakeholders.
• Understanding of fault identification techniques and risk assessment.
• A variety of influencing strategies.
• Resilience.
• Embraces and leads change.

Desirable Skills

• Completion of the Safety Case Workbook.
• Experience managing a team.
• Experience working with projects.
