About the role To provide authoritative, professional Health & Safety (H&S) advice and support in one or more H&S domains (e.g. radiological safety, fire protection, occupational hygiene, conventional H&S). The Safety Specialist plays a key role in shaping, implementing, and assuring H&S policies, procedures, and programmes, while actively supporting operational delivery, promoting a strong safety culture, and driving continuous improvement in safety performance. Key responsibilities • Safety Policy & System Leadership: Lead the definition, development, and continuous improvement of safety policies, standards, and management system arrangements tailored to Sellafield Ltd operations. Ensure these are compliant with relevant legislation, align with regulatory expectations and industry standards, and proportionate to operational risk – with a clear focus on protecting employee health and safety. • Expert Safety Advisory: Act as a company Subject Matter Expert (SME) in one or more specialist safety domains, providing authoritative advice to enable delivery of the SL Operating plan. Identify and assess workplace hazards and risks, and recommend proportionate control measures to support safe, compliant operations. • Assurance & Compliance Oversight: Lead and support assurance activities – including inspections, audits, observations, and reviews – to verify compliance with H&S requirements and behaviours. Provide oversight of the safety management system to ensure requirements are correctly interpreted and implemented in the workplace. • Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement: Analyse H&S performance data and trends, and benchmark SL arrangements against industry standards to inform safety decision-making. Lead or support the development and delivery of improvement programmes that reduce risk, strengthen organisational safety capability and enhance safety culture. • Capability Development: Develop and deliver H&S education and training to build a well-informed and competent workforce. Coach, mentor, and assess H&S role holders and those accountable for safety delivery to strengthen capability competence of the workforce. Promote ownership of safety responsibilities at all levels and encourage active participation in safety initiatives and continuous learning. • Incident Investigation & Learning: Support the duty holder in the investigation of incidents and events, ensuring robust root cause analysis, implementation of effective corrective actions, and the sharing of learning to prevent recurrence. Lead investigations where incidents involve more complex technical or organisational factors. • Stakeholder Engagement & Influence: Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure H&S expectations are understood, embedded, and consistently delivered. Provide credible challenge and support to operational teams, projects, and leadership to drive improved H&S outcomes. Represent Sellafield Ltd in engagements with regulators and other external stakeholders. • Leadership & Culture: Lead by example, setting high standards for health and safety, championing best practice, and encouraging others to demonstrate appropriate behaviours. Promote a positive safety culture in line with Sellafield Ltd standards and expectations. Your Skills and Qualifications Essential: • Postgraduate / Level 5/6 qualification in the relevant safety specialism (e.g. MSc in Occupational Health & Safety, NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Certificate of Operational Competence in Occupational Hygiene, Certified Radiation Protection Advisor). Attaching them at application stage will ensure a smooth process and prevent delays. • Chartered Member of a relevant Professional Body (e.g. CMIOSH, CRadP, ICertOH). • Experience in applying H&S principles within high-hazard, highly regulated environments – ideally within the nuclear, energy, or process industries. • Knowledge of safety management systems, risk assessment methods, and hazard control techniques. • Experience in developing and implementing H&S policies, standards, and management systems aligned with regulatory and operational requirements. • Experience in conducting and leading assurance activities, including audits, inspections, and compliance reviews. • Proven track record of delivering H&S training, coaching, and capability development across a range of roles and organisational levels. • Ability to gain DV clearance. Desirable: • Experience in managing or leading advisors and other safety professionals, providing technical direction, mentoring, and fostering collaboration to support effective safety delivery. • Skilled in leading incident investigations, applying structured root cause analysis techniques, implementing effective corrective actions, and facilitating the sharing of learning to improve safety performance. • Stakeholder engagement experience, including influencing operational teams, senior leaders, and external bodies such as regulators or industry groups. • Experience in promoting and embedding a positive safety culture, including behavioural safety and leadership engagement.
