Senior Technologists deliver prioritised tasks, aligned with their area of responsibility and skill set, supporting implementation of practical technology solutions and development of technical requirements supporting operational delivery.

The Technologist role supports the identification, collation, interpretation, presentation, analysis and management of information and data, enabling effective decision making within required deadlines. Tasks may include development, demonstration and implementation of technologies and processes which reduce the technology risks across the directorate or company.

Senior Technologists maintain knowledge of the relevant plant and processes they support, at a level beyond that expected of a Technologist or Supporting Technologist. They understand and where their work fits into the site mission and the interfaces/interdependencies with other facilities and processes. Senior Technologists are responsible for provision of technical support on emergent issues within their area of expertise, while also identifying and setting direction of their work and others for the benefit and development of the business.

Principal Accountabilities

The Technologist is accountable to the Technology Manager.
• Deliver complex work packages to develop, demonstrate and implement new technologies, approaches and processes, utilising Best Available Technique in order to drive safer, faster, better value for the future. This will include routine and non-routine challenges for a Senior Technologist and will require only infrequent support.
• Undertake technical delivery involving data collection, data analysis, testing, process monitoring, and assisting in technical projects.
• Manage their own workload effectively, delivering to agreed deadlines, may be expected to coordinate others in support of delivery.
• Pro-active identification of resolution to problems, anticipating potential obstacles and engaging relevant stakeholders. As required, Senior Technologists also lead others in identifying possible causes and chains of events when faced with medium complexity challenges.
• Provide technical advice to stakeholders and customers on technology matters.
• Produce accurate technically underpinned papers and proposals.
• Gather learning from experience (LFE) from all areas and apply this learning effectively when delivering work scope.
• Support prioritisation activities, ensuring risks are appropriately considered and managed.
• Delivers plant and process improvements to support operational requirements.
• Acts as Intelligent Customer to specify, deliver and then review technical work packages delivered by suppliers (internal or external as appropriate).
• Provides high quality technical underpinning information to enable accurate decision making.
• Collect and analyse data to validate technology performance and compliance.

Job Context and Challenges

Technologists deliver their role from various locations including office based and practical environments. Collectively they are a multidisciplined team, including but not limited to, scientists, engineers and mathematicians. The teams are often embedded within business portfolios, allowing them to successfully integrate with other functions and deliver in line with enterprise strategies and priorities.

At the senior level, Technologist must be an effective communicator, with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority, adapting communication style where appropriate. They must maintain a stakeholder network to enable the delivery of their work through relationships built on effective communication, collaboration and rapport.

Essential Skills

• Demonstrated delivery of credible technical work at the appropriate grade.
• Knowledge of relevant plant, equipment, processes, safety cases, standards and expectations.
• Relevant qualifications in STEM subject.
• Must be numerate, articulate, and able to communicate well with stakeholders.
• Knowledge of the Sellafield Ltd business, including a good knowledge of strategies and aims, while understanding their role in delivering the mission.
• Competent in data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of information.
• Experience of writing technical reports and papers for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Desirable Skills

• Professional recognition with an appropriate institute/professional body e.g. chartership/membership, as appropriate.
• Relevant experience working with technical teams.
